On the left side menu, select the program you want to change. From these, you can select the Set this program as default or Choose defaults for this program.

If you select the Set this program as default option, this will set that program to open any files it is capable of opening. If you select the Choose defaults for this program option, you will be able to select which file types you want this program to automatically open. Hope this helps. So, one has to manually find that program and associate the file. Here's an example. I use Eudora OSE as my default mail program (don't try to change me because it'll never happen after more than 15 years). If someone sends me a.pdf attachment, Eudora wants to know how I want to open the file. There are but 3 or 4 programs from which to choose in the list and none of them is the Windows Reader.

So, I have attempted to manually search for how to associate the file. I've done this several times but have been unable to find Windows Reader. Now that I'm here in this forum I can see it's not going to be possible. It seems the only option is to install Adobe Reader. My only other option is to 'Save' every attachment somewhere on my system then allow Win8 to use the default program for that file. It just makes life more complicated. It should be easy to allow the user to associate a program within Win8 to open attachments in programs that have nothing to do with Windows.

This doesn't open the file immediately, however it does display a dialog box asking: 'How do you want to open this type of file (.pdf)?' It's just a simple case of clicking on 'Keep using Reader' and the.pdf file opens immediately.
