I have a server I built 2 years ago that just had its SSD die, so it's a perfect time for me to upgrade my OS, from ESXi 5.5, to potentially ESXi 6.5. How I've been using 5.5:.
For free, with their free license key for one CPU socket. With PCI passthrough for my storage controller for one of the VMs.
5 VMs. 32GB RAM.
Supermicro X10SL7-F. Managed with fat client on Windows My questions:. Does anyone see a problem with trying to continue this on ESXi 6.5, for free?. They're still doing the free license, and it's fully functional on a single socket, right?. How do people manage it? Fat windows client? Something else?.
Can I run VMs created with ESXi 5.5? I was lucky to be able to save the VMs onto a separate datastore. Is 6.5 ready for production or do you think it's buggy? There is a web client for 5.5 its just an add on however I don't see them doing away with the free license and the free license for 6 is actually better and allows you to do more. As far as VM function after upgrade it will probably prompt you to upgrade the VM hardware compatibility, but upgrading should update the datastores as well, or at least be able to access older ones. But you'd want to consult someone else as there maybe a specific upgrade path for you from 5.5 such as 5.5u36u26.5 or something similar I personally use the fat client because it's easier for me, and I'd personally wait till 6.5u1 to do any upgrading.
Good to know the free license is still decent. Well, it's a particularly advantageous time for me to upgrade right now, as I have an SSD failure and already have downtime, and can easily install 6.5 instead of 6.0.
I presume 6.0 is more stable, although I figure with an enterprise product like ESXi, their initial stable versions should be decent? As I have all of my VM files on a separate SSD that is fine, I'd really like if I could just import the data store on my new ESXi 6.0/6.5 install and not format that disk. Anyone know if that's possible?
This guide will give you the steps needed to reset the license file so that you can apply the evaluation license back to your ESXi host. WARNING: This is for education/informational testing/development purposes only, and should not be used on a production server. To reset your expired ESX 4.x, ESXi 4.x, ESXi 5.x or ESXi 6.x 60 day evaluation license:.

Login to the HOST via SSH or Shell. Remove /etc/vmware/license.cfg. Copy /etc/vmware/.#license.cfg to /etc/vmware/license.cfg. Restart the vpxa service Or simply copy the code below and paste it into your SSH session. Rm -r /etc/vmware/license.cfg cp /etc/vmware/.#license.cfg /etc/vmware/license.cfg /etc/init.d/vpxa restart Then open the “Licensed Features” option in the configuration tab of the ESXi host through the vSphere Client. Click on “Edit” in the top right of the “Licensed Features” page Once the “Assign License” window opens you will see two options.
There will be a category for “Evaluation Mode” and Assigned License. Click on the “(No License Key)” option and then click “OK”. This will set the host back to “evaluation” mode and will give you access to all features for 60-days!
